Association for the Development of Families of the Ixil
The Civil Association APRODEFI was founded in 2000 by community leaders, farmers, homemakers, teachers and young people of the rural communities in the Ixil region, in the Municipality of Chajul, El Quiche, Guatemala.
Established as a legal entity, APRODEFI is governed by a Board of Directors and advised by a team of technical experts. The members, primarily families victimized by the armed conflict of the 1980s, voted to support projects to improve the quality of life for people in the communities.
Members determined that education of young people was their top priority. So Centro de Formacion Nuevos Mayas was established.
In addition to the school, APRODEFI supports the following projects:
- Finca Paxil:
Agricultural land purchased for the benefit of students and members of the association, including those families in other parts of the Ixil region.
- Economic Development
One of the aspects of economic development are the women’s high quality weavings for high-end boutiques.
- Food Security:
Mary Lois Sennewald, NMS President, is authorized by APRODEFI to act as their representative in the U.S.
